KEUCO design classics in a listed barn

How a 300-year-old building became a modern sanctuary

Hidden beneath the steep gable roof of a historic barn in Waiblingen, Swabia, you can find the modern home of an architect and his family. The barn, having served storage and agricultural purposes, had been empty for a long time and was increasingly in need of repair. Zlatko Antolovic and Alexander Wendlik, owners of Coast Office Architecture, recognised the potential of the once dilapidated structure and took on the task of renovation with great dedication. They placed great value on being true to the original when rehabilitating the listed building. Today, designer furniture and the combination of old fabric with modern materials create a harmonic unity. The central stairway, a black monolith in pickled spruce, connects the two living storeys in the upper part of the barn, where the architect and his family live. Earlier, a pulley for moving goods was located here. The three lower levels are office space.

The storied history, idyllic location and the professional challenge it presented were what quickened the interest of Stuttgart architect Zlatko Antolovic in dedicating himself to the proper restoration of this historic, 17th-century barn. The task of achieving a harmonic combination of modern materials and furnishings has been achieved with bravura. For the furnishings, the architect relied on design classics like the PLAN blue tap from KEUCO.

The living area is conceived as an open, loft-like space. The light-coloured brushed oak parquet heightens the airy atmosphere. In the whole of the living area, the historic roof trusses can be seen. The contrast between rustic beams and contemporary interior design is particularly successful in the bathroom. Light tiles and white ceramics give the wood great space to exude its charm. The chrome-plated surfaces of the fittings lend glittering notes.

The PLAN blue tap over the washbasin demonstrates, like all KEUCO fittings, the highest quality of manufacture, materials and technical workings. The exclusive use of brass turned and milled parts means solid structures, underlines precise forms and ensures perfect surfaces.

At the same time, the PLAN blue single-lever mixers are able to save water. The flow rate is only 6 l/min. However, the water experience is not affected by this: special aerators ensure a bubbly, soft jet of water. The PLAN blue single-lever mixer has been certified to the WELL classification system. For Zlatko Antolovic, another advantage in selecting the tap.

By renovating the historic barn, the architect has created a very special home for himself and his family, right in the heart of that idyllic Hohenstaufen city, Waiblingen.
